NHS Healthcare

The National Health Service (NHS) is the main healthcare provider in the UK.

NHS treatment is free for UK residents. Overseas nationals are not eligible for free NHS treatment, except if they need emergency treatment while in the UK.

The UK government strongly advises visitors to take out appropriate travel insurance for the duration of your trip to cover any medical expenses.

If you’re visiting from Europe, make sure to carry a valid EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) in case you need immediate and necessary medical treatment in an NHS hospital – find out how Brexit may impact EHIC cards.

Changing Places, Disabled Access Public Toilet

The Pavilion Gardens, High Peak Borough Council and Parkwood Leisure worked in partnership to install a Changing Places toilet in the entrance of the The Octagon Hall, opposite the ice cream parlour, at the site to cater to the needs of disabled individuals.

More than a quarter of a million people in the UK with disabilities cannot use standard accessible toilets, as they do not accommodate all disability needs. Changing Places toilets are designed to meet these requirements.

This facility includes a movable hoist for access throughout the room, a changing table, and an adjustable sink and toilet. The installation ensures that everyone, regardless of their access needs, disability, or dependence on carers or specialist equipment, can use a toilet with hygiene and dignity.

Emergency services

Buxton Hospital has a Minor Injuries Unit, open Monday – Sunday, 8am – 10pm. The nearest Accident and Emergency is located at Macclesfield District General Hospital, approximately 12 miles away. Stepping Hill Hospital in Hazel Grove also has an Accident and Emergency located 15.5 miles away.

Emergency Contacts

Call 999 (Ambulance, Fire & Police) – in an emergency
You should only dial 999 in the case of a serious emergency.

Non-Emergency Contacts

Police non-emergency: 101
Call 101 for general enquiries or to report an incident that does not require immediate attention.

NHS 111 Service: 111
Use the NHS 111 service if you need urgent medical help/advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation.

Dental Care

If you think you need urgent dental treatment:

  • Call the dentist you are registered with.
  • Use the NHS 111 online service if you cannot contact your dentist or you do not have one.

Lightwood Dental Care, on Hartington Road, Buxton is a private practice and can potentially take emergency patients who are not currently registered with them – depending what the issue is. This practice does not operate under the NHS. Treatment is paid for either per treatment and/or via a private insurance plan.
