Buxton Opera House youth engagement group bring their first production to High Peak audiences

Having recently achieved Arts Council England National Portfolio status, Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre is entering into an exciting time and this year their Learning and Engagement programme, Platform 3, produce their first in-house children’s show for Christmas 2023. Established in 2021, Platform 3 aims to make theatre accessible to the youth of High Peak.

Brendan Murray’s Hare and Tortoise will tour to various primary schools across the High Peak and will also be performed to audiences in the Pavilion Arts Centre throughout December.

This musical play is a perfect introduction to theatre for 3 – 8 year olds!

Through this 50-minute play, Hare and Tortoise follow the seasons as their wintry world becomes Spring, Summer and finally Autumn and the two friends get ready to race each other!

The production will ignite imaginations in this lively and accessible retelling of a traditional tale, using poetry, music and characterisation. It explores trust, friendship, nature and the excitement of growing up, especially designed for our younger audience as a perfect introduction to theatre.

“Hare and Tortoise challenges us to stop and breathe and enjoy life – without always rushing from job to job.” – Allie Spencer, Director

The world was winter shivery and shaking… Tortoise sleeping: sound and silent… Hare was waiting, wishing, wondering. When will Tortoise wake?” Brendan Murray, Hare and Tortoise.

Playing the Hare is Niamh Hine, who has previously starred in Alice in Wonderland (M&M Theatrical Productions). She has also performed in street theatre festivals, fire shows and devised theatre for local communities. Adam Horvath plays Tortoise. He has previously worked on productions with Nottingham Playhouse and Derby Theatre and has produced a short film which is currently having a successful festival run.

Hare and Tortoise will be running at the Pavilion Arts Centre from Saturday 16th – Sunday 24th December, with a relaxed performance on Sunday 17th December at 10am and a BSL-Interpreted performance on Sunday 24th December at 10am.

Some performances are already sold out or limited seating, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are priced at £8.
