After a year in the planning, Buxton will treated to a flypast of The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire this weekend, organised by Michael Hilton of buxtonweather.co.uk

On what would have been Buxton Carnival Day this Saturday, (postponed until 2022 due to the pandemic), the town will catch a rare glimpse of the iconic fighter aircraft in support of Buxton International Festival which takes place from 8th – 25th July.

The famous Supermarine Spitfire became a symbol of freedom during the summer months of 1940 by helping to defeat the Luftwaffe air attacks during the Battle of Britain in 1940. It was the highest performing Allied aircraft in 1940.

More Spitfires were built than any other British combat aircraft before or since World War Two – 20, 342 in total. There are six Spitfires on BBMF.

“Usually when the aircraft are travelling to a large air show, or similar, a flypast can be arranged to support large gatherings and events. We got confirmation this can go ahead for Buxton just this week! After liaising with the RAF over the last year, we’ve agreed the pilot will contact me on the day shortly before the flight, so all being well and as long as the weather is sufficiently good – it’s all systems go!”, said Michael.

The Spitfire plans to do some circuits around the Buxton at approximately 2.15pm on Saturday 10th July 2021.

“Pilots and all aircrew on the BBMFlight are all volunteers who work full time as fighter pilots and aircrew during the week, and then fly these planes in their own time at the weekend”, said Michael.
