In high spirits: whisky set to take over in the popularity stakes according to Buxton’s Beer District

Remember not so long ago when there were countless new gins popping up and gin festivals seemed all the rage? According to Buxton’s only independent off-licence The Beer District, whisky is now taking over gin in the popularity stakes. Some of us may still be struggling with the concept of booze fashion but like anything else, fads come and go and alcohol is no exception. Stocking some of the best whisky brands such such as Glengoyne, Ardbeg, Ledaig, Arran, Cardhu, GlenAllachie and Teeling, the current whisky trend has seen sales sky rocket at Beer District.

Gin has been the ‘it’ spirit for the last decade, and over the last two turbulent years, it proved the go-to tonic for many. But the tide is turning on the gin industry. Whisky brands have shifted their strategies to attract a younger crowd. With new more innovative products appearing on the market the industry is also tapping into the at-home cocktail boom by talking about recipes using whisky. Then there’s the serious collectors, with the rare whisky market and its value (per bottle / cask) exploding in recent years.

You’ve probably got the impression many of these beverages have travelled down from Scotland or Ireland, where they know a thing or two about whisky, but you only have to go as far as central Buxton to pick one up.

“Since we opened in 2016, gin has always been the big winner, but things have changed and people still love gin but whisky is now now our No.1 seller in spirits. We’ve therefore expanded the range vastly with many more small batch, limited edition and rare whisky brands”, said owner Darren White.

If you don’t know your single malt from your blended malt or single cask, the expert staff at Beer District are always on hand to offer friendly advice and expertise on food matching, flavours, mixers and more.

The Beer District supports a myriad of nearby breweries and distilleries but also stock exotic tipples from every corner of the globe, which you’re less likely to find in a large supermarket. There’s something to fit any budget, be a gift for a loved one, some exciting tipples for a special event or just something different to sup in front of the telly on a Saturday night.

“Most of our beer range comes from local or regional breweries in the Peak District and Derbyshire and we’ve expanded on this in the last 12 months. We’re really keen to support the local economy, especially in these challenging economic times. And buying local means you’re helping to reduce your carbon footprint”, said Darren.
