Welcome to the Buxton & Leek College English and maths family, where you will discover a professional and friendly team of tutors who are experts in their chosen subjects. You will be made to feel at ease with your study, as well as motivated and engaged.
BLC offer Functional Skills in both English and maths at their Leek, Buxton and Derby (Kedleston Road) Campuses. There are places still available, all applications welcome.

ABOUT ENGLISH AND MATHS COURSES AT BUXTON & LEEK COLLEGE
Functional Skills are qualifications in English and maths that equip learners with the basic practical skills required in everyday life, education, and the workplace.
Functional Skills on campus is delivered in a classroom environment, you can take your exam during the year at a time when your tutor has assessed you are ready to be entered for your exam.
OW WILL I BE ASSESSED AND ACHIEVE A QUALIFICATION?
Functional Skills English and maths are assessed through an exam accredited by Pearson’s.
At the beginning of your course a tutor will discuss assessments and examinations in more detail.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND COST
If you didn’t achieve an English or maths GCSE grade 4 (or above) or a Grade C (or above) then you do not need to pay for a Functional Skills course in these subjects.
If you choose to study Functional Skills on campus you will undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment that will provide an indication of your starting level. A tutor will discuss the outcome of your assessments and your starting level in greater depth when you have completed them.
