Borrow don’t buy! First ever Library of Things launch date announced

library of things

Transition Buxton CIC is excited to announce the launch of the Buxton Library of Things. Derbyshire County Council have kindly allowed this Not-for-Profit enterprise run by volunteers to occupy part of their library on Kents Bank Road. The Buxton Library of Things will join over 70 others across the country.

The launch takes place on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, at 11am in the Registry Office Suite at the library. Cllr Barry Lewis, Leader of Derbyshire County Council, will be attending to offer his support and insights into the initiative. If you would like to attend the launch event send an email to [email protected] – everyone is more than welcome to come along.

Their mission is simple: “Borrow don’t buy.” Instead of acquiring items like hedge trimmers, ladders, long-handled loppers, or carpet cleaners that you only need occasionally, borrow them from the Library of Things. It’s not only environmentally friendly but also budget-conscious, and it declutters your space!

You can now browse the inventory of the Library of Things here. Borrowing fees are suggested but flexible (“Pay As You Feel”) to ensure equal access, and some high-value items may require a refundable security deposit. Once the Library of Things has opened on 30th January, the website will be show available dates for items and suggested fees.

Starting from 3rd February 2024, volunteers will be available on-site at the Library of Things twice a week: Mondays from 5pm – 7pm and Saturdays from 10am – 12 noon. Alternative arrangements can be made. If you’re interested in volunteering, their team welcomes you, and full training can be provided – contact details are below.

Can you donate an item to the Buxton Library of Things?

The Library’s inventory will continue to expand. They are eager to hear about second-hand items in good condition, ideally with original instructions and attachments. If you have such items you no longer use and would like to donate, please contact their team by email.

Include a phone number so that a pickup can be arranged.  For safety reasons items in poor condition can’t be accepted. Items will be checked on arrival and where appropriate serviced between borrows. When they reach the end of their useful life they will be responsibly disposed of.

For all enquiries, email the team at: [email protected]
