Buxton Opera House shortlisted at Music & Drama Education Awards 2025

Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre have been shortlisted for two categories at the 2025 Music and Drama Education Awards. These awards, hosted annually by Drama & Theatre Magazine and Music Teacher Magazine, honour exceptional contributions to music and drama education, highlighting innovation, excellence in teaching and leadership in the field.

Buxton Opera House is in the running for the ‘Outstanding Drama Initiative’ Award and the ‘Excellence in Primary and Early Years’ Award. Allie Spencer, Head of Creative Learning and Engagement, expressed pride in their double nomination, particularly praising the Work Experience program and Satellite Opera House scheme for creating vital pathways for youth in the arts and strengthening school partnerships.

“It is great to be selected as finalists for these awards. We are really proud of both our Work Experience programme and our Satellite Opera House scheme. We are creating exciting pathways and opportunities for young people to access the industry as well as developing meaningful partnerships with our local schools. We are very grateful to all our skilled staff and freelance practitioners who work with us on these programmes.”

The ‘Outstanding Drama Initiative’ nomination highlights the Work Experience program’s role in helping local youth create a touring Theatre in Education production, while gaining invaluable industry insight.

Vicky Giliker, Headteacher at Harpur Hill Primary School, which is one of the many partner schools with the Opera House, said, ”

“This is an incredible project where the young actors and technicians are positive role models for our primary school students. Our students not only gain a lot from the play itself and its important messages, but they also have a glimpse of positive activities they can get involved in at secondary school and possible future jobs.”

The Satellite Opera House scheme has been equally influential, bringing drama and musical theatre to remote schools in the High Peak area, enhancing after-school activities and staff training in the arts to continue the inclusion of arts in their curriculum.

These initiatives are made possible through funding from Arts Council England, allowing free participation for schools and students. The winners will be announced at the January 2025 ceremony in London.
