On Thursday, 30th January, the team at Buxton Opera House was delighted to receive the Excellence in Primary & Early Years award at a prestigious ceremony in London.
The team have been recognised for their work with the Satellite Opera House, an innovative initiative that brings drama and musical theatre to isolated schools in the High Peak area. Through expert-led support, this scheme provides schools with specialised after-school activities, exclusive development opportunities for children – including a weekly Artist in Residence programme featuring bespoke performing arts workshops – and additional training for school staff to integrate the arts into their curriculum.
Hosted annually by Drama & Theatre Magazine and Music Teacher Magazine (part of the Mark Allen Group), the Music and Drama Education Awards celebrate excellence in music and drama education. These awards honour individuals and organisations that have made a significant impact in these fields, highlighting outstanding achievements in teaching, innovation, and leadership.
Other nominees were: Barnet Education Arts Trust, MishMash Productions and Nottingham City Libraries, Performatots Pre-School, Speech Bubbles: Drama for Communication, The Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Early Years Network, and The Grange Festival.
Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre received a further nomination for the ‘Outstanding Drama Initiative’ Award in recognition of their annual Work Experience scheme.
Allie Spencer, Head of Creative Learning and Engagement said, “We are delighted to receive this award that recognises the work that Buxton Opera House is doing in the High Peak primary schools. We are grateful to all our practitioners who have contributed to this project and who have instilled valuable social and performance skills into the young people they have worked with.”
