Heritage Open Days Buxton 2025 – Events Listings

Heritage Open Days 2025 takes place from 12th – 21st September across England, offering free access to over 5,000 events, and this includes Buxton.

It’s the nation’s largest festival celebrating history, architecture and culture – inviting the public to explore hidden sites, enjoy guided tours, workshops and exhibitions, many of which are usually closed or charge entry.

This year’s theme focuses on architecture, making it a perfect opportunity to discover England’s built heritage – from historic homes and industrial landmarks to community heritage gems.

It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

The event programme is co-ordinated by Vision Buxton.

Exhibitions

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery: Pop‑Up Museum at Buxton Library

Whilst Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is currently closed, come and visit the team at their temporary home at Buxton Library, handle some real museum artefacts and ask any questions, and say hello to the famous Buxton bear!

Buxton Opera House

Join Trevor Gilman of the Buxton Local History Society for an engaging talk. A front-of-house volunteer at Buxton Opera House for 15 years, Trevor has also worked on the building professionally. He has extensively researched its history through the archives of the V&A in London, the Institution of Civil Engineers’ library, and the Theatres Trust. He has written widely and delivered numerous talks on the Opera House over the years. Hosted by Trinity Church in collaboration with the Buxton Local History Society.

Saving Buxton’s Crescent: Renewing the Fifth Duke’s Vision by Richard Tuffrey MBE

Once the centerpiece of Georgian Buxton, the Crescent fell into decline before being brought back to life through a major restoration partnership. Reopened in 2021, it now flourishes once more as a spa hotel and popular visitor attraction.

Building on Heritage: Echoes of Buxton’s Past in Shaping its Future

Join Keith Hamilton of Stephenson, Hamilton and Risley Studio to hear about exciting plans to revitalise Buxton. This talk is essential for anyone interested in helping shape the town’s future while respecting its architectural heritage. Hosted by Buxton Town Team.

Saving the Cistern – The Story of Higher Buxton’s First Fresh Water Supply

Commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire in 1840, the fountain in Higher Buxton’s marketplace was built to provide fresh drinking water for residents. It soon became the focal point of the annual wells dressing and a key feature of the area. In this talk, Simon Fussell of Buxton Civic Association explores the marketplace’s evolution, the fountain’s cultural significance – including the street named after it – and recent efforts to restore the now-declining Grade II listed monument.

Grade II star Regency church with decorated chancel and fine stained-glass windows. Highlighting connections with the Dukes of Devonshire and local music making. Informal free recitals on the 4-manual William Hill organ during HOD opening hours.

Christ Church Burbage

All are welcome to visit. The church will be open with a display of historical documents and photographs. Enjoy a guided tour of the churchyard, highlighting notable local individuals buried there and their connection to Burbage.

The White Lion (formerly pub)

The White Lion on Spring Gardens has been newly renovated, and the owners have opened up the building for Heritage Open Days to explore this building with origins as far back as 1630.
