Academic triumphs with outstanding results
Last month once again saw outstanding results in both GCSE and Level 3 students at BLC. Those who missed their grade when they were assessed at school, can re-sit their English and Maths GCSEs whilst they study their chosen programme. There was celebration and tears of joy for the ‘class of ’23’ Level 3 students, with the college reporting outstanding results being achieved across the board.
Standout achievements included Tea Gaines, 19, from Leek, securing a triple Distinction Star in Art & Design, the highest possible grade. She will be going on to study Costume Design and Textiles at Huddersfield University. Similarly, Dylan Marriott-Richardson, another 19-year-old from Leek, matched the feat with a triple Distinction Star in his Media Level 3, ensuring a promising start for his academic journey ahead.
Real-world experience for students
A recent collaboration has been with the prestigious five star Buxton Crescent Spa Hotel. This partnership has led to the provision of apprenticeship opportunities, allowing students to gain practical experience in a luxury setting, honing their skills for a competitive job market.
Links have also been made with Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust where students will be able to gain experience on the inner workings and management of the visitor centre and visitor experience.
Somerset House Awaits: New Saturday Art Club at Leek campus
But it’s not just about traditional career pathways. Recognising the importance of nurturing creativity, the college is set to launch a unique initiative: a Saturday club for students at their Leek campus in the Leek School of Art. This isn’t your average weekend activity. Students will have the chance to brush up their art skills under the mentorship of renowned local artists. Moreover, the club isn’t just about skill-building; it’s about showcasing talent. A competition will be held, offering students the coveted opportunity to display their artwork at the iconic Somerset House in London, a dream for many budding artists.
Strengthening links with local schools
Buxton & Leek College’s commitment to community-building doesn’t end there. Their efforts have skyrocketed in terms of collaboration with local schools. From a humble partnership with 3 local schools last year, they’ve dramatically expanded their engagement to 27 schools across Buxton, Leek, and the High Peak region. This not only increases the college’s visibility but also strengthens the bond between educational institutions, ensuring smoother transitions for students and more enriched learning experiences.
Buxton & Leek College is not just a place of education; it’s a cornerstone of the community. As it strengthens ties with local businesses and organisations, it continues to pave diverse and enriching paths for its students, ensuring their success and the prosperity of the community at large.
