Too Hot Outside? Head Underground at Poole’s Cavern
Looking for an unforgettable day out during the school summer holidays? Venture beneath the hills of Buxton and discover one of the Peak District’s most fascinating natural attractions at Poole’s Cavern, where spectacular limestone formations, hidden chambers and centuries of history await.
Whether you’re visiting as a family, enjoying a day out with friends or looking for something different to do this summer,, this unique underground attraction offers the perfect summer adventure for all ages, as one of the Peak District’s most fascinating natural attractions!
Discover the Wonder of the Peak District
Step into a spectacular subterranean landscape where vast chambers are adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, some of the largest and most impressive formations in Derbyshire.
Visitors can choose from guided tours led by knowledgeable custodians or explore at their own pace using the new audio-guided tour app, launched in 2026.
Journey deep beneath the earth and explore limestone caverns that have been forming for millions of years. Marvel at the natural beauty of this underground wonder as you learn how crystal formations have lined the chambers over countless centuries. It’s an awe-inspiring experience for visitors of all ages and a fantastic way to day out for all the family.
Explore Thomas’s Trail in Grin Low Woods
After your underground adventure, continue the day outdoors with a visit to the brand-new Thomas’s Trail, located in Grin Low Woods within Buxton Country Park, directly opposite the Visitor Centre, Cave and Café.
Created as a lasting tribute to Thomas and reflecting a shared commitment to wellbeing, nature and community connection, this family trail celebrates the Animals of Buxton: Past & Present.
The trail features 14 large illustrated discs suspended from trees throughout the woodland, each showcasing an animal connected to Buxton’s landscape – from prehistoric creatures that once roamed the area to the wildlife that inhabits the woods today.
As part of the project, visitors can also discover two impressive woodland carvings: a beautifully carved bench and a striking totem pole featuring animals from both Buxton’s ancient and modern natural history.
Perfect for families, Thomas’s Trail encourages children to explore the woodland while learning about its rich heritage. Those who complete the trail will receive a special commemorative sticker to remember their adventure.
Trail booklets are available from Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre for £2, or free with entry to Poole’s Cavern, making it an excellent addition to your Father’s Day plans.
Climb to Solomon’s Temple
Thomas’s Trail also provides the perfect route to Buxton’s iconic landmark, Solomon’s Temple. Standing proudly at 437 metres (1,434 feet) above sea level, this Victorian folly offers spectacular panoramic views across the High Peak.
Take your time on the woodland walk, pause for a well-earned breather at the summit and enjoy some of the finest views in Derbyshire. It’s a rewarding experience that combines history, nature and breathtaking scenery.
Refuel at Café in the Cavern
Why not make a full day of it and enjoy lunch at Café in the Cavern?
Whether you’re looking for a hearty meal after exploring the cavern, a quick snack before tackling the woodland trails, or simply somewhere to relax with a coffee and cake, the café has something for everyone.
The menu includes hot meals, light bites, homemade soup, hot and cold drinks, ice cream and a tempting selection of homemade cakes. There are also plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available, with gluten-free bread on offer too.
Visiting with your four-legged friend? The café is also dog friendly, making it an ideal stop for the whole family.
For hungry explorers, the popular Full English Breakfast is a great way to start the day, while those returning from the woods, cavern or nearby Go Ape forest adventure course, can enjoy a well-earned refreshment before heading home.
