Days out from Buxton: Womble Mania! at Heights of Abraham

You may already know about the Heights of Abraham in Matlock Bath. You may have even already braved the famous cable car ride to its leafy summit but did you know there are now Wombles up there?

A Nostalgic Launch with a Modern Twist

Officially opened by Marcus Robertson, the son of Wombles creator Elisabeth Beresford, Womble Mania! is a family-friendly interactive exhibition that celebrates the beloved creatures, who are now enjoying underground and overground adventures at the Heights of Abraham. Explore Buxton went along to see the ribbon being cut, and of course, we weren’t about to pass up on an opportunity to meet the Wombles!

Womble Fever: Then and Now

A familiarity with the Wombles is very much age dependent. Back in the 1970s, they were big. Really big! The stop-motion animated children’s TV show narrated by Bernard Cribbins was universally adored and watched religiously by millions. The Wombles were everywhere, even dancing and singing on Top of the Pops (ask your parents and grandparents about the Wombles and while you’re at it, they can probably tell you about Top of the Pops too). If you can’t quite recall all the facts, don’t panic, the display is not only an extensive exploration of the Wombles creation and rise to fame but there are also brand new versions of the Womble to marvel at.

Why Are the Wombles Back?

But why are the furred superstars back and visiting Matlock Bath? We asked the Head of Sales and Marketing, David Thornton: “In an age where the world is moving so quickly, it’s often the kids or grandkids that have to explain what’s going on. We thought it would be nice to give the older generations something to share.” There is also the environmental theme, sadly still relevant. The Wombles were the original eco warriors or as the main theme tune says “making good use of the things that we find, things that the everyday folks leave behind”. As long as the rubbish piles up, the Wombles will still be around to remind us to pick it up and put it in the right bin.

Selfies, Hugs, and Feel-Good Moments

We have to say we didn’t witness the Wombles tidying up the Heights of Abraham but that’s probably because it was already nice and clean. They were on hand to take selfies and dish out the hugs, which seems equally important. If you feel like you’re missing something in life, it’s probably a Womble hug. Get yourself in that cable car now.

More Than Just Wombles to See

Of course, the Heights of Abraham isn’t just about the Wombles and the aerial journey across ‘Little Switzerland’. If for some bonkers reason, that isn’t enough for you, the Heights has its usual variety of attractions and facilities: There’s 60 acres of nature and heritage to explore, including two spectacular show caves, along with exhibitions, shows, walking trails, playgrounds, shops and a café and a restaurant.

There’s a good reason why it’s one of Derbyshire’s premier attractions and has 4.5/5 on both Google and TripAdvisor. What the EB team love most about Heights though is the vibe. It’s a friendly family run business and it feels like it, and the Wombles are a natural fit. All together now … “Remember You’re a Womble …” We promise you’ll be singing it on your way back down.
