After closing in July 2023, The New Inn has proudly reopened its doors following an ambitious refurbishment. The visionary duo behind this revival are new owners Emma and Matt Blackwood, who also run The Old Sun Inn, have infused their passion and expertise into resurrecting this local favourite.
The popular venue has undergone a transformation that respects its heritage while introducing a modern twist. Dating back to around 1800, the Grade II listed building was originally known as the New Sun Hotel, then in the 1840s as the New Inn and Yorkshire Commercial Hotel. So, a few days after opening, the Explore Buxton team dropped by for a drink and a chat with Emma and Matt, to find out more and have a look around.
Why The New Inn?
Emma and Matt, known locally for their success with 53 Degrees North and The Duke in Burbage, saw this as an opportunity to plant their roots firmly in the community.
“We could see what potential it had. It’s such a well-known place and part of the town’s history. But we felt there was a gap in the market for a smart, ‘grown-up pub’ here in Buxton,” said Matt.
Their independence from brewery ties, thanks to purchasing the venue freehold, allows them full control over what they offer. They’re keen to highlight local producers with regional ales such as Bradfield Brewery and Wincle Beer Co, John Hattersley wines from Bakewell, and Blue John Gin distilled in Derbyshire, to name but a few.
Small plates and perfect pairings
Keen to be distinctly different from The Sun Inn, where there’s a big focus on food, Emma and Matt want to offer an alternative.
“Lots of places have big food menus, so we wanted to offer tasty, small plates that people can enjoy with a drink,” said Matt.
There’s a menu of imaginative small plates, cheese and meat boards that change weekly (check out the cheese menu at the bar), antipasti boards, and ‘dirty nachos’. Bar snacks include Buxton Sausage Co. sausage rolls, scotch eggs and pork pies. Click here to view the menu.
