Fresh From the Sea in Buxton: Go Fish Seafood Bar & Grill

More Than Fish and Chips: Inside Go Fish Seafood Bar & Grill

When Go Fish Seafood Bar & Grill opened in Buxton, it didn’t take long for the restaurant to gain a loyal following among Buxton diners. Known for its fresh fish, relaxed atmosphere and flexible menu, it has quickly become a favourite for seafood lovers – but there’s more to the story than many people realise.

While many people know it for its superb fresh fish and full restaurant dining experience, what’s less well known is that Go Fish is also a great spot for a more casual bite to eat. You can pop in for breakfast, meet friends for a light lunch, enjoy a coffee and a bacon bap, or settle in for a relaxed evening meal – making it a flexible and welcoming addition to Buxton’s food scene.

Generations of Seafood Knowledge

Behind the restaurant is Danny Morris, whose family business, RGM Seafood, is a sixth-generation family-run fish mongers with roots dating back to the 1800s. Danny grew up around the business his family founded, so it’s fair to say seafood has always been part of his life. Over generations, the Morris family has built a strong reputation for supplying fresh, high-quality, sustainable seafood, developing longstanding relationships with trusted suppliers – including those at New Smithfield Market, Billingsgate Fish Market and Grimsby where they source some of the finest daily catches.

Seeing an opportunity to bring that heritage directly to diners, Danny, his wife Nicky and their sons Will and Henry spotted a gap in the market in Buxton for a dedicated fish restaurant and opened Go Fish Seafood Bar & Grill in 2024.

Danny explains: “Having grown up working in our family fishmongers, G.R. Morris & Son, it felt like a natural next step to open a fish restaurant in the town. We realised there wasn’t really anywhere locally specialising in fresh seafood. The restaurant is supplied by our sister company, RGM Seafood, so we already have long-standing relationships with trusted suppliers. That means we can source some of the freshest fish and shell fish available and serve it exactly as it should be – fresh, never frozen.

With that level of expertise behind the scenes, and under the guidance of Executive Chef Alan Hill – who has previously worked with some of the world’s leading chefs – diners can expect seafood that’s carefully prepared and cooked to a high standard, allowing the natural flavours to take centre stage.

More Than Just a Seafood Restaurant

While seafood is the star of the show, the menu at Go Fish offers plenty of choice.

Guests can enjoy classic dishes such as their famous fish and chips, homemade fish pie, grilled seafood dishes and other favourites. But the restaurant also caters for those who might prefer something different, with options including steak burgers, sandwiches and other comforting favourites.

Families are also well catered for, thanks to the Little Snappers Kids Menu, which offers younger diners their own tasty choices.

To accompany your meal, Go Fish also has a fully licensed bar, serving a selection of drinks that pair perfectly with the seafood menu.

Casual Dining, Light Bites and Brunch

One of the things that’s less widely known about Go Fish is that it isn’t just a traditional sit-down seafood restaurant.

Alongside the main menu, the team has expanded their offering to include light dining and brunch options, perfect for a relaxed lunch or quick bite. Popular choices include the Fish Dog, Prawn Cocktail Sandwich, and Roast Chicken Sandwich.

You can even pop in simply for a coffee and a bacon bap, making Go Fish just as suitable for a laid-back catch-up as it is for a full dining experience.

Breakfast by the Sea

The restaurant now also serves breakfast from 9am to 12 noon, offering a delicious start to the day.

The menu includes traditional grilled fresh Manx kippers, fresh smoked haddock, simple favourites like bacon or sausage sandwiches and even a full English breakfast, – all served in the welcoming surroundings of the restaurant.

Choose Your Fish from the Counter

Another unique feature is the fish counter inside the restaurant. Customers can browse the fresh selection and purchase fish to take home – or choose their preferred catch and have the chefs cook it exactly how they like it to enjoy in the restaurant.

It’s a rare opportunity to enjoy restaurant-quality seafood tailored to your preferences.

Buy Fresh Seafood Online – From Shore to Your Door

In addition to the restaurant, Go Fish also offers an online fishmonger service, allowing customers to buy fresh seafood for home delivery. Through their website, customers can order a wide variety of sustainable fresh fish and shellfish, as well as smoked products and deli items, all delivered straight to their door.

The service is supported by their team of highly experienced fish merchants, ensuring customers receive high-quality seafood that’s fresh and responsibly sourced. As well as supplying households, the business also provides seafood to farm shops, hotels and restaurants across the Peak District area.

For seafood lovers who want to enjoy restaurant-quality fish in their own kitchen, the online fishmonger offers a convenient way to have fresh fish delivered directly from shore to door!

Their ice cream comes from Pomeroy Farm, while Dukes Drive Farm Shop supplies the meat produce, ensuring the menu features high-quality ingredients sourced from trusted local producers wherever possible. Wine is from Hattersley Wines in Bakewell.
