Hardwick Hall Sold: New Owners Announce Ambitious Restoration Vision for Buxton Landmark

Former home of The Green Man Gallery gets new owners

The historic Hardwick Hall, a 22-bedroom property and former home of The Green Man Gallery, has officially been sold, with completion confirmed on Tuesday 18th November 2025. The new owners, Solanki Holdings UK & International, are no strangers to Buxton’s architectural heritage – earlier this year, they purchased the neighbouring Peak Buildings, the former home of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, at auction in January 2025.

A deal revived through community encouragement

Speaking to Explore Buxton on how the acquisition came about, owner Nirad Solanki explained:

“We were first offered Hardwick Hall immediately after securing the Peak Buildings, but at that stage the financial metrics simply didn’t stack up. When the asset re-emerged and members of the local community approached me directly, it became clear we had to recalibrate and make the deal viable.”

With both prominent buildings now under the same ownership, Solanki Holdings has set out a clear intention to restore the site’s collective identity, honouring its past while reinventing it for future generations.

Solanki went on to say:

“We’re genuinely thrilled to take stewardship of another cornerstone of Buxton’s heritage. Hardwick Hall is an iconic asset with deep historic resonance, and our ambition is to reunify the wider site to reflect the scale and integrity it enjoyed in the late 1800s. It’s a privilege to bring it back under one cohesive vision for the town’s future”.

The developers say they plan to ‘reopen and reconnect the entire site, delivering a mixed-use scheme that is both commercially sustainable and sensitive to its heritage setting’.

“This is not about short-term profit; it is about ensuring that these buildings continue to serve the town for generations to come”.

A Building With Deep Roots in Buxton’s Story

Dating back to c.1895, Hardwick Hall was originally built as an extension to The Peak Hydropathic Hotel; the neighbouring property that later became home to Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Over the decades, Hardwick Hall has seen many transformations. In its early years, it operated as part of a hotel before being repurposed as a Canadian Army Hospital during the First World War, alongside the adjoining Peak Buildings.

Following the Second World War, the property was purchased by the local branch of the Royal British Legion, becoming a well-loved community venue for dances, concerts, and social gatherings for many years.

In 2014, the Green Man Gallery moved into the building, establishing it as a vibrant arts hub until its closure in 2024.
