Buxton Works – new co-working hub in Buxton
A fresh wave of innovation is set to breathe new life into one of Buxton’s most recognisable buildings. The former home of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery – known as Peak Buildings – is poised for an exciting transformation into a dynamic new co-working space designed to support the town’s growing community of entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses.
From Museum to Modern Workspace
After standing as the home of Buxton Museum for 96 years, Peak Buildings has a rich cultural legacy. Previously by Derbyshire County Council, the building was a cornerstone of the town’s heritage offering until its closure to the public in June 2023, when structural safety concerns were identified.
Although initially intended as a temporary measure, plans evolved, and in May 2024, the decision was made to permanently relocate the museum to a new site.
A Vision for Collaboration and Creativity
Following its sale at auction in January 2025 for £435,000 through SDL Auctioneers, Peak Buildings has been acquired by Solanki Holdings.
This week, the company unveiled plans to reimagine the space as a co-working hub for “like-minded entrepreneurs, businesses and freelancers.” The ambition goes beyond simply providing desks – this will be a place tailored for “founders, businesses and professionals who want more than just a desk.”
The development promises a flexible and modern working environment, featuring:
- Private offices
- Open co-working areas
- Meeting and collaboration spaces
- Virtual business services
The aim is to create a thriving professional community within a building steeped in history – blending heritage with forward-thinking design.
Part of a Bigger Picture for Buxton
The transformation of Peak Buildings aligns with wider ambitions for Buxton’s regeneration as plans progress for the redevelopment of Springs Shopping Centre, off Spring Gardens in Buxton. Derbyshire County Council has previously confirmed its commitment to reopening the museum in a new permanent location, positioning it as a key cultural anchor for the town’s future.
Alongside this, there are also plans to relocate Buxton Library into the town centre, contributing to a broader vision of a vibrant, culture-led destination that supports both residents and visitors.
