Pig & Pepper Bakery in Higher Buxton have built up quite a following since they opened in 2017 and their homemade bread and pastries are much sought after locally. As well as selling fresh bread and cakes the bakery offers a range of deli produce, locally sourced from the Peak District.
But it doesn’t stop there: owners Laura and Aran Cheatle have perfected their techniques over time with the dos and don’t’s of bread making and have now launched a range of bread and pizza making classes. Why buy a bread maker when you can become one?!
“We’d had quite a few enquiries from customers at the bakery for bread making classes and as no one was offering this locally we thought: let’s do it!”
In groups of up to four, classes are ideal for the complete novice up to intermediate level – and more importantly anyone who would love to make their own bread but don’t know where to begin. You’ll learn about the science of bread making through from kneading, shaping and proving to baking your own individual loaves using a domestic oven.
An Introduction to Bread Making (4 hours) is their most popular class, geared towards total beginners. You’ll learn how to make a white loaf, a rye loaf, Irish soda bread and an Italian style focaccia.
Love pizza and want to perfect your own? The Pizza Making Evening (2.5 hours) is great fun and students will learn to make their own pizza bases, grissini breadsticks and dough balls (with dips). You get to top, bake and enjoy your pizza at the end of the class with drinks.
The Introduction to Sourdough Bread Making (6 hours) is a more comprehensive class for those interested in baking using natural leaven. You will learn to make three types of sourdough loaves, savoury crackers and Jewish challah bread along with a plaiting technique. You’ll also receive a sourdough starter of your own to take home.
All classes include a tasty lunch with a selection of breads, deli meats, cheeses and other homemade treats and refreshments. You take home all your recipes and the bread you’ve made during the day. Prices start from just £45.
A Christmas gift with a difference…
“If you’re looking for a Christmas gift with a difference, this could be it. If you know someone who’s toyed with learning to make bread but not got round to it, now’s your chance to give them exactly what they want. We always have great fun at the classes and everyone encourages each other”. Gift vouchers are available to purchase in-store, contact Pig & Pepper for more details.
Laura: “It’s such a great feeling when people come on a class almost afraid to touch a ball of dough, but after learning the basic techniques they get that confidence to keep on baking for themselves. We use a domestic oven for the session so you can replicate everything very easily at home”.
“We had a wonderful day with Laura learning how to start out baking bread at home. There were plenty of tips, tailored to our experience and the course would suit total beginners or those who are already somewhat used to getting their hands floury”, said one of their recent students.
