Throughout spring 2021, Buxton Opera House are offering an exciting community-centred projects for and including young people, children, families, adults, and community groups.

During this time in the pandemic, as we move forward, communities need to be given time, space, and opportunity to (Re)ConnectTake StockEmerge and Celebrate

All projects will work within current government guidelines. Projects will begin online but as soon as regulations allow the theatre very much hopes to be able to work with participants face to face again.

EMERGE DANCE PROJECT

Do you want to emerge from your home dancing?

Buxton Opera House is looking for 2 groups from the local community to take part in an exciting new project led by local dance artist, Jennie Le Port. Whether you are an experienced dancer or have only ever tapped a toe to music, if you are aged between 12-100+ we want you to get involved!

The aim of the sessions is to have fun, connect and get our bodies moving. Emerge also offers the opportunity to work on choreography that will (when restrictions allow) be part of a digital flash mob connecting dancers across the community.

The sessions will take place over Zoom for one hour a week.

SHARED SOUND SINGING PROJECT

Love to sing? Maybe you sing in a choir, along to the TV or out loud in the shower.

Shared Sound wants to bring together voices from our community, to create a space of connection through singing. We invite you, whatever your ability, to join us in weekly sessions led by local Musical Director Clare O’Neil.

All sessions will be delivered in an accessible and inclusive way. Over 5 weeks participants will be involved in online workshops, working on singing technique, developing confidence and learning a song that will connect all groups involved in this project.

The sessions will take place over Zoom for one hour a week.

ONLINE WORKSHOPS

Into the Woods – A Shared Journey

Join the well loved local theatre company Babbling Vagabonds in part one of an exciting story-making adventure! Once again we are stranded, the pandemic is ruling our life, but if we could take a walk through the woods what would we find?

What creatures are lurking and what stories would we find as we journey beneath the canopy of trees?

Can you help us craft a brand new story? Do you want to go on an adventure into the unknown?

Throughout this fun, fast-paced story-making session the story host will ask questions and require your ideas in a ‘choose your own adventure’ style quest story. As you submit your answers through the chatbox the story host chooses where this tall tale will go… but where will it end? Watch as a second story-maker frantically draws along to the action and then laugh at the silly drawings and words that appear on your screen.

You and the other participants will create together a shared story that will go on to greater things.

An Introduction to Puppetry and Puppet Making

Join Sam Wilde for an introduction to puppetry and puppet making, a hands-on session starting by looking at a variety of basic paper puppetry techniques and styles.

The focus will be on recycled objects and materials for use in puppetry making and you will leave the workshop with a fully realised newspaper string-less marionette as well as with hints and tips for using it in performance and play!

Sam is a theatre and puppetry designer based in Bristol. He was recently listed on The Stage 100 list of influential people in theatre for 2021 and was the 2016/17 Laboratory Set and Costume Designer at Nuffield Theatres, Southampton. He trained in Theatre Design at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School graduating with an MA in 2015.
