Buxton International Festival is a summer celebration of the very best of opera, music and books. Recognised nationally and internationally as one of the UK’s leading arts festivals and held annually at Buxton Opera House the festival has been thrilling audiences for more than 40 years.
Buxton International Festival has a reputation in producing rarely-performed operas by major composers offering often once-in-a-life-time opportunities to hear and see these special productions.
In 2019 Buxton International Festival celebrated its 40th anniversary by reviving the genre of opera pasticcio with a specially written work Georgiana. The critically acclaimed and award winning opera depicted the story of the exuberant 5th Duchess of Devonshire – whose family, at the nearby Chatsworth estate, remain inextricably entwinned with Buxton.
The packed programme each year features fully-staged professional operas, as well as showing touring operas, classical concerts and literary talks. The literary talks feature well known names with Gyles Brandreth, Andrew Marr, Jonathan Dimbleby and many more talking about their latest book publications.
Today Buxton International Festival has evolved to become more than just a summer celebration. Work takes place all year round to provide opportunities for young musicians, platforms for rising stars in the North of England, BIF delivers Art Council Awards in local primary schools, and runs the local Kaleidoscope Community choir.
Renowned for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, this wonderful annual festival attracts both dedicated opera lovers and those new to the genre.
