Organisers of Buxton Carnival, the Buxton Well Dressing Festival – a registered charity based in Buxton – have announced that they urgently need additional funding to ensure the event can go ahead this year, following new safety requirements linked to its classification as a “Major Event.”
Buxton Carnival Day has long been a highlight of the town’s cultural calendar, drawing thousands of visitors and locals alike. However, as the scale of activities continues to grow, so too do the responsibilities and costs associated with hosting such a large-scale event.
Recent assessments have officially classified the day as a “Major Event” for emergency planning purposes – bringing with it a new layer of regulations and logistical demands.
Why the Urgency?
With this new classification comes a requirement for a fully coordinated Emergency Control Centre to be based in Buxton for the duration of the event. In addition, organisers must provide private Emergency Medical Cover capable of supporting crowds of up to 15,000 people. The cost of this medical provision alone is estimated at around £6,000.
These measures reflect wider changes in legislation affecting public gatherings across the UK, introduced in light of events such as the Manchester Arena bombing and the introduction of Martyn’s Law, which aim to improve safety and preparedness at large-scale events. While essential, these changes place a significant financial strain on volunteer-led organisations.
A Day Like No Other
Buxton Carnival Day is not a standalone event – it is the culmination of a vibrant and bustling day across the town. The day features:
- Buxton Carnival Parade
- Buxton Festival Fringe performances
- Buxton International Festival events
- Events at The Octagon at Pavilion Gardens
- The popular athletics road race
- Parade of Queens in Pavilion Gardens
- A lively funfair in the Market Place
- Carnival Concert on the Band Stand, Pavilion Gardens
- Entertainment / live music hosted by local pubs, bars, and restaurants
Together, these events transform Buxton into a hub of celebration, attracting an estimated 15,000 people and delivering a substantial boost to the local economy, hospitality sector, and community spirit.
A Tradition Worth Protecting
Steeped in nearly 200 years of history, Buxton Carnival is more than just a day of festivities—it is a cornerstone of the town’s identity. Generations have grown up with the tradition, and for many, it represents a unique blend of heritage, creativity, and community pride.
The carnival is organised by the Buxton Well Dressing Festival, a registered charity that oversees the entire week-long programme of well dressing events. Run entirely by volunteers, the organisation relies heavily on donations and community support.
Organisers said:
“Run by volunteers, we do not have the income to pay for the Emergency Medical Cover,” said the organisers.
“Please donate to help raise the Medical Cover expenses needed for the day. With your help, we can continue this tradition. It would be a great shame to lose it as it benefits so many people.”
How You Can Help
To ensure this much-loved event continues for future generations, the organisers are asking for public support.
