Lomas Foods Buxton announces sudden closure
One of Buxton’s long-established independent food retailers has announced it’s sudden closure, marking the end of an era for the town.
Lomas Foods, based on Spring Gardens, has confirmed it will cease trading on Saturday 25th July 2026, bringing to a close more than 35 years of serving the local community.
A familiar name to generations of Buxton residents, Lomas Foods has been renowned for its wide range of everyday groceries, quality fresh meats including award-winning sausages, popular deli counter and buffet catering for special occasions. Over the decades, the family-run business has become a much-loved fixture on Spring Gardens, serving countless local families and visitors alike.
In a heartfelt statement shared with customers, the Lomas family said:
“It is with deep sadness that we share that Lomas Foods Limited will cease trading and enter administration on Saturday 25th July.
This business began in 1981 with Maurice Lomas — a man with a vision, a work ethic, and a love for serving people. With the support of his three sons, Mark, Chris and Jon, that vision grew into a family business that has stood proudly on Spring Gardens, Buxton for over 35 years.
We have poured our lives into this shop. It has been more than a business – it has been part of the community, part of our family story, and part of the daily lives of so many wonderful customers. Closing our doors is incredibly painful, but rising costs and falling footfall have left us with no other choice.
To every customer, past and present: thank you. Your loyalty, your conversations, your support over the decades have meant more than you will ever know.”
The announcement is likely to be met with sadness by many local residents who have supported the business over the years. Like many independent retailers, Lomas Foods has faced increasing challenges in recent years, with rising operating costs and changing shopping habits placing significant pressure on traditional high street businesses.
The closure is another reminder of the important role independent businesses play in Buxton’s community and the challenges many continue to face.
