Review: Friends! The Musical Parody at Buxton Opera House ★★★★☆

Last night at the beautiful Buxton Opera House, Friends! The Musical Parody proved there’s still plenty of life (and laughter) in everyone’s favourite 90s sitcom.

From the moment the cast burst onto the stage, it was clear this wasn’t just a tribute – it was a full-throttle, laugh-out-loud celebration of all things Friends. Packed with razor-sharp one-liners, clever musical numbers and brilliantly exaggerated character traits, the show lovingly spoofs the series while keeping its heart firmly intact.

One of the real joys of the evening was the seamless set changes. The cast cleverly moved pieces around the stage themselves, transforming Central Perk into Monica’s apartment (and beyond) in full view of the audience. It was slick, inventive and added an extra layer of comedy and energy to the performance.

There were some standout performances across the board. Enzo Benvenuti as Ross Geller was brilliant – completely committing to Ross’s awkward charm and dramatic spirals, nailing the mannerisms and physical comedy that make the character so iconic. Phoebe Buffay was wonderfully quirky and offbeat, while Amelia Atherton’s Monica Geller delivered just the right level of competitive intensity and high-strung perfectionism.

But the star of the show was certainly Eva Hope as Rachel Green. Uncannily like Jennifer Aniston in both look and presence, she captured Rachel’s journey, humour and heart effortlessly. It was a performance that felt both affectionate and sharply observed – and deservedly drew huge laughs and applause.
