Buxton Town Hall for sale: Historic landmark seeks new chapter

Buxton Town Hall for sale

Buxton Town Hall, has been placed on the market, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a significant piece of the town’s architectural and cultural heritage. The price is available on application, and the building is currently occupied by High Peak Borough Council.

A Building Born from Fire

The Town Hall stands on a site shaped by tragedy. In September 1885, the former Market Hall – designed by Henry Currey – was destroyed in a devastating fire. The blaze, reportedly started by a paraffin lamp in one of the shops, quickly spread beyond control, overwhelming the town’s fire brigade despite the presence of a newly acquired fire engine.

In the aftermath, the site was selected for a new civic building, and in 1886 a design competition was launched. Manchester architect William Pollard won the ÂŁ50 prize for his ambitious proposal, and local builder James Salt was commissioned to carry out the construction at a cost of ÂŁ8,900.

Distinctive Architecture in a Conservation Setting

Completed in 1889, Buxton Town Hall is a striking example of late Victorian civic architecture. Designed in the style of a French château, the building features a mansard roof adorned with iron cresting, elegant Venetian windows, and a prominent clocktower topped with a cupola.

The Town Hall lies within the Buxton Conservation Area and is a Grade II listed building.

A Cultural Hub Through the Years

Beyond its civic role, the Town Hall has also played a part in Buxton’s cultural life. Buxton Museum & Art Gallery first opened in the building in 1893, remaining there until 1928 before relocating to Peak Buildings on Terrace Road. The museum continued to operate from that site until its closure in June 2023, and is currently temporarily based at Buxton Library on Kents Bank Road.

A Rare Opportunity

The Rightmove listing says that “High Peak Borough Council is looking to appoint a preferred purchaser that will ensure the asset has a sustainable future use and act custodian of this key town centre historic building.” Interested parties can view the full property details via the listing on Rightmove here.
