Buxton Museum and Art Gallery staff have been hard at work this summer, making sure as many people as possible can see, handle, and enjoy the museum’s fascinating exhibits and artefacts.
Since the museum closed its Terrace Road site in 2023 due to structural concerns, the Derbyshire County Council-run team has been busy keeping history accessible. From a new base at Buxton Library on Kents Bank Road, they’ve launched an interim service with events, exhibitions, and a travelling pop-up museum – alongside an active online presence.
Visitors to Buxton’s Eat in the Park Festival last weekend were among those who got hands-on with treasures from the collection, including fossils, a mammoth’s tooth, and even a piece of fossilised plesiosaur skin. Festival-goers also took selfies with the museum’s famous bear, while youngsters could design their very own prehistoric animals – a challenge they can still try at home.
Derbyshire County Council is continuing to work with partners to secure a permanent home in the town for the museum, art gallery, and library.
Councillor Dawn Abbott, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, said:
“Our museum and art gallery team have been working incredibly hard to give people as many opportunities as possible to enjoy all the museum has to offer while plans for a new permanent home move forward. Summer events have been perfect for taking artefacts out into the community. The pop-up has been really well received, and our online content is as popular as ever.”
Children’s Activity: Design Your Own Mermaid Garden
There are still plenty of ways to get involved this summer. At Buxton Library, families can explore a “mermaid’s underwater garden” and design their own version to win a prize every Tuesday and Thursday during the school holidays, as part of the Summer Reading Challenge.
Heritage Open Days
On Tuesday 16th September (12 – 4pm), the museum will host a special Pop-Up Museum at Buxton Library as part of the Heritage Open Days Festival. Visitors can drop in to meet the team, handle real museum artefacts, and say hello to the Buxton bear – no booking required.
