Pavilion Gardens in Buxton restoration scheme of sundial

A restoration scheme at the Spiral Mound in Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens has seen a sundial returned to the site for the first time since the 1960s.

The project has also seen the installation of two bespoke curved benches and an interpretation board which explains the significance of the historic Spiral Mound. Footpath surfaces have also been repaired.

 The project has been led by the Friends of the Pavilion Gardens who successfully applied for grant funding from Tesco Bags of Help and were awarded £8,000 to restore and tell the story of this historic area of the Gardens.

 Chairman of the Friends Brian Shepherd said: “It is fantastic to have finally finished this project which the Friends of the Pavilion Gardens have worked hard on for many months. The seating is being used by many people and the sundial and information board bring people to the Spiral Mound.”

 Councillor Tony Kemp, Executive Councillor with responsibility for the Pavilion Gardens at High Peak Borough Council, said: “I’d like to congratulate the Friends who volunteer their time and energy to making sure the Gardens remains an attractive place to visit.

 “I know this project has been a real labour of love for the group and one of the members in particular who worked with a local firm to design and build the benches. It’s also great to see a sundial returned to the Spiral Mound for the first time in decades.”
