Who doesn’t love ice cream? Well in Buxton we’re lucky enough to have some of England’s finest locally made ice cream on offer as well some of the posh stuff too. Here’s a pick of our favourites, in no particular order.
[box style=’success’]Super Whip | Usually outside Buxton Opera House[/box]
Usually spotted in The Square opposite the Opera House, this family owned business goes back generations! As you’d expect, its freshly made, creamy whipped ice cream with the usual yummy trimmings like raspberry sauce and a chocolate flake. Lots of other treats on offer too if you fancy more indulgence like the classic Magnums, Feasts, Strawberry Splits…. Perfect to go and sit in the gardens with.
[box style=’success’]Lovington’s Ice Cream at Charlottes Chocolates[/box]
Lots of varied flavours like blackberry, chocolate and mint choc but we particularly liked the rum n raisin! You can get single or double scoops in a cone or a tub if you prefer – or, a sugar cone (mmmm) and if you want to go really crazy – an ice cream sundae (with 3 scoops and toppings!). Sitting outside is a perfect spot to watch the world of Buxton go by and they also serve teas, coffee’s and sell delicious homemade chocolates..
[box style=’success’]Mövenpick at Simply Thai[/box]
A vanilla and strawberry combo was lovely and Movenpick is one of the best commercial ice creams out there – really very creamy and velvety. Deliciously good following a thai green curry…
[box style=’success’]Bradwell’s Ice Cream at Pavilion Gardens[/box]
An institution many locals might say. Bradwell’s Dairy Ice Cream has been made in Bradwell in the Peak District, Derbyshire for over 100 years. All the flavours are yummy of course they are – vanilla is a classic and well known for its buttery, strong creamyness and its just lovely. But mint choc gets our vote currently and tastes quite natural too. Available in the cafe kiosk, perfect to accompany a stroll past the lake or just to sit along the pretty promenade and enjoy the view.
[box style=’success’]Carte D’or Ice Cream at Vintage Sweet Shop[/box]
The Vintage Sweet Shop sells all manner of vintage and classic sweet treats with a wide selection of American candy too (Payday bars!) They’ve now started selling Carte D’or Ice Cream too. Rich and sweet, with a strong flavour – the chocolate ice cream is very sickly but very good. Take yourself to The Slopes with your ice cream for some quiet time.
[box style=’success’]Pizza Express – yes really[/box]
Pizza Express isn’t automatically associated with deserts, but of course Pizza, and that’s pretty good here too. But nope, there’s a couple of ice cream deserts you should check out if you’re dining here, especially if you have a voucher code you’re using which can often mean a 2 or 3 course meal at a really reasonable price. First up – The chocolate brownie – gluten free (you’d never know) is totally divine and served with the vanilla ice cream – which is really creamy and just tastes nice quality. New for the Spring menu – Coconut Delight, 2 scoops of intensely creamy, dairy-free, coconut sorbet, made with coconut milk and coconut pieces, served with fresh mint – it’s really refreshing after a pizza and a nice change from vanilla too. Failing that, we’ve also tried the Leggera Raspberry Sorbet which is also pretty darn ummmmmmmm.
Is there somewhere you’ve tried that you think we should too? Is there a totally delicious ice cream out there in Buxton that we don’t know about? Then get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter, we’ll give it a whirl and if its good, we’ll add it to the list!
