History of Buxton Cinema
Located in the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton, the cinema is part of a building with deep theatrical roots. The Theatre originally opened in 1889 as the “Entertainment Stage”, designed by architect William Radford Bryden.
Over the decades the building has had several identities: it became the Hippodrome (1903) (showing silent films), later the Playhouse Theatre (1932) when film usage winds focusing again on stage performance, then the Paxton Suite (1979) after re-development.
In 2010 it re-opened as the Pavilion Arts Centre under a £2.5 million redevelopment creating a modern arts venue.
Buxton Cinema opened in 2017, it brought film back to the town after a long absence, offering a high-quality cinema experience in a historic and beautifully restored venue.
It screens a diverse range of films, including the latest mainstream releases, independent and art-house productions, world cinema, and family favourites. It also hosts special events such as themed screenings, film festivals, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers. The venue has comfortable seating, an accessible layout, and a friendly atmosphere that reflects its role as a hub for the local community.
Situated within the elegant Pavilion Gardens complex, the cinema benefits from its picturesque surroundings, with cafés, gardens, and other cultural attractions nearby.
Pavilion Arts Centre also hosts a variety of other events
The 355 seat venue is also hosts a variety of other events: It’s perfect for smaller performances like drama, stand-up comedy, and live music, including the popular Buxton Buzz Comedy Club and Coffee Concerts.
The Pavilion Arts Centre plays an important role in several major festivals:
- Buxton Fringe Festival
- Buxton International Festival
- International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival
It’s also home to Buxton Opera House Creates, our programme that supports community involvement in the arts. The space is used for creative projects, meetings and rehearsals, and performances by our community groups.
