With its opera house and summer arts festivals, Buxton has an established reputation for showcasing art. Launched in 2014, The Buxton Spa Prize adds even more colour to the town’s artistic palette. Artists of all ages and ability are welcome to enter the competition, resulting in an exhibition at The Green Man Gallery.
If the brooding skies, wild backdrop and diverse architecture of Buxton are not enough incentive to get out your pencils and brushes, then consider the generous prizes. First prize in the open category is £5,000, provided by the Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust. The second prize is £1,000 provided by the University of Derby and a third prize of £500, sponsored this year by Buxton Roastery. There is also the Harold Riley Sketchbook Prize, with first place receiving £2,000, plus a Children’s Prize for artists under 12 years old and a teen prize for those under 18 years old.
All entrants are encouraged to express what Buxton means to them. The en-plein air outdoor competition means that if you’re walking in and around town in the months of May and June, you’re likely to see some of the work in progress. Prize founder Trevor Osborne commented, “I am delighted that in only four years The Buxton Spa Prize has become a leading en plein air arts event. Last year, over 150 paintings were exhibited at The Green Man Gallery and the unique Harold Riley Prize for sketch/work books rose to 35 entries making the Prize the Artists Prize with a difference. I am proud of what has been achieved in this beautiful town in the High Peak – it is becoming an arts beacon in the hills!”.
The event also has a popular People’s Choice category and the Buxton Festival Choice awards which raises the profile of artists and the competition to the public and the Festival’s audience during July.
It’s all about Buxton…
Entrants to the competition must submit artwork created in and around the Buxton area. One of the organisers Neil M Scowcroft said, “When Mr. Osborne first came up with the idea of an open art competition to celebrate Buxton and all that it has to offer, the enthusiasm from artists was phenomenal and this has continued to grow. The exhibition of works on display at the Green Man Gallery in July provides the opportunity to showcase the town’s culture, natural beauty and heritage. This is reflected in the stunning architecture and vistas featured in the artwork, which include some of the town’s lesser known locations. Both visitors and locals might discover something or somewhere new in Buxton when they view the exhibition”.
The exhibition will also give artists the opportunity to sell their works.
This year an artists social event will take place in the Tearooms at No.6 The Square on 12th May from 2pm . This gives artists the chance to meet each other, talk about their work and share what inspires them. Artist Kieran Ingram will be presented with The Buxton Spa Prize Peoples Choice 2017 at the event.
The Prize judges include, leading UK ‘en plein air’ artists Ken Howard OBE RA and Pete ‘The Street’ Brown, Derbyshire Museum’s Manager Ros Westwood, renowned Peak District Artisan Ingrid Katarina Karlsson, Children’s and Teen Prize Sponsor Louise Potter and Amanda Penman editor of ArtsBeat Magazine.
