During the coronavirus pandemic, our major supermarkets have made huge efforts, introducing various measures to try to curb panic buying and help the elderly, vulnerable and NHS workers get the shopping they need.
If you’re wondering what’s in place where, here’s a handy list of supermarket shopping measures. We’ve taken all the information from their official social media channels and official websites but the situation is rapidly changing so we will keep this page updated.
Some supermarkets continue to limit the number of customers going into stores so there are sometimes` queues to go in. If you can, please try to shop in-store so those who are not as mobile can use online slots.
Contactless payments across the board have been increased from £30 to £45.
Buying restrictions on certain items are generally not currently in place during the current lockdown.

Aldi
Buying restrictions: No restrictions currently in place.
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: Monday – Saturday: access 30 mins before store opens
Key workers priority shopping: NHS and emergency workers get priority in queues and also 30 minutes early access before tills open on Sundays.
Social distancing measures: 2m distance markers on floor at checkouts, perspex screens at tills, queuing system outside store to limit entry at busy times.
Asda
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: No priority hours
Key workers priority shopping: No priority hours
Social distancing measures: Perspex screens at tills, queuing system outside store to limit entry at busy times, one adult per trolley is in operation.
Morrisons
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: No priority hours
NHS/Key workers priority shopping: NHS hour at the begining of each day, apart from Sunday
Social distancing measures: Perspex screens at tills, queuing system outside store to limit entry at busy times. Morrisons have asked all customers must wear a mask in store, unless they provide proof of a medical exception.
M&S
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: No priority hours
Key workers priority shopping: No priority hours
Social distancing measures: Additional social distancing measures in place across stores (not further detail).
Sainsbury’s
Volunteer Shopping Card: Customers who have been advised to self-isolate have to rely on friends, family and local communities to collect their groceries for them; to help with this Sainsbury’s have launched a Volunteer Shopping Card to enable people to shop for others easily in store. Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: No specific hours but can go to front of queue at all times
NHS/Key workers priority shopping: No specific hours but can go to front of queue at all times
Social distancing measures: Markings on floor in aisles and at checkouts, perspex screens at checkouts, queuing system outside store to limit entry at busy times. Latest guidance announced by Sainsbury’s during the current lockdown has stated that ‘when shopping in our stores, you must wear a mask or visor unless you have a medical exemption. And you should also shop on your own.’
Tesco
Buxton is an Express store so priority shopping hours won’t apply but other local stores will: Tesco Superstore in Glossop, Tesco Superstore in Whaley Bridge and Tesco Metro in Macclesfield.
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: Whaley Bridge and Glossop stores are operating priority hours for the elderley and vulnerble Wed and Sun (browsing only) 9am-10am (Buxton store is not included as this is an Express store).
Key workers priority shopping: Whaley Bridge and Glossop stores are offering priority queing for NHS and emergency services staff who can go to the front of queue at all times (larger stores only, Express stores are not included, eg. Buxton).
Social distancing measures: Markings on floor in aisles and at checkouts with a one way system down aisles in the Buxton store, perspex screens at checkouts, queuing system outside store to limit entry at busy times, one adult per household in store.
Iceland
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: No priority hours
Key workers priority shopping: No priority hours
Social distancing measures: Iceland are encouraging customers to stay 2m apart in store.
Waitrose
Elderly / vulnerable priority shopping: Elderly and vulnerable have priority access at all times
NHS/Key workers priority shopping: NHS and social care workers have priority access at all times
Social distancing measures: Waitrose in Buxton are continuing to limit the number of customers in the shop at any one time so expect to queue at busy times. Perspex screens have been added to tills with 2m floor markings at tills.
