New ‘Thomas’s Trail’ Nature Trail Opens in Grin Low Woods

A brand-new family nature trail celebrating the Animals of Buxton: Past & Present has opened in Grin Low Woods (Buxton Country Park) in April 2026, thanks to a partnership between Buxton Civic Association (BCA) and the Thomas Theyer Foundation.

Named Thomas’s Trail, the project reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to wellbeing, nature, and community connection, creating a lasting  memorial to Thomas that families will enjoy for years to come.

The trail features 14 large, illustrated discs suspended from trees throughout Grin Low Wood, opposite Poole’s Cavern. Each disc showcases an animal connected to Buxton’s  landscape – from prehistoric creatures that once roamed the area to species  found in the woods today. The artwork has been beautifully created by local artist  Bethany Pearson.

As part of the trail, two new woodland carvings have also been installed in Grin  Low Woods: a carved bench and a striking totem pole featuring animals from  both past and present. The pieces have been created by the talented sculptor  Lorraine Botterill, who also carved the much-loved Charlie and Martha  sculptures already enjoyed by visitors to the woods.

Designed to engage children and families with nature in an accessible and  imaginative way, the trail encourages participants to explore the woodland while  learning about its rich natural history. Those who complete the trail will receive a  special commemorative sticker.

Thomas’s Trail booklets are available from Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre priced at  £2 or free when purchasing entry to Poole’s Cavern.

Dave Green, CEO of BCA, said: “Thomas’s Trail is a wonderful addition to Grin Low  Woods and Buxton Country Park. This project not only celebrates the incredible  wildlife, both past and present, that makes our landscape so special but also  creates an engaging outdoor experience for families. We are incredibly grateful to  the Thomas Theyer Foundation for their generous support in making this trail  possible.”

Chris Theyer, Thomas’s mum and CEO of the Thomas Theyer Foundation, said: “We are proud to support Thomas’s Trail and to partner with BCA on a project that  encourages children and young people to connect with nature. Improving access  to outdoor spaces and supporting wellbeing are central to our charity’s mission,  and we hope this trail brings enjoyment, learning and positive experiences to  many families.”
