What do you remember when you think of Spring Gardens in Buxton? It is a high street with a rich history?
The Spa Cinema, Woolworths, Mac Fisheries, Miller’s Café, E.C. Milligan’s Drapery and Milliner’s shop are a few of the places that hold fond memories for the many people in Buxton. What do you recall about Spring Gardens?
Local theatre makers, Babbling Vagabonds and digital projection specialists Illuminos, are creating a visual delight to brighten up Spring Gardens later this year and they need the help from local people. “We need your stories and images of Spring Gardens to be part of an exciting new arts project,” said Mark, Joint Artistic Director of Babbling Vagabonds, “We want everyone, young and old to share their stories, past and present about this place so we can project a video onto a shop front and bring to life everyone’s stories.”
“Children can get involved too,” says Rob Vale, Director at Illuminos. “If they send in their ideas for the mythical creatures that are lurking behind the boarded-up windows and shop fronts, I will animate them and make them dance across the building”
This is all part of an exciting three-year cultural programme linked to the High Streets Heritage Action Zones. Buxton was one of 68 high streets to receive funding from Historic England to support this project which aims to find new ways to revive our high streets.
How can you get involved?
Do you have a story you want to share about Spring Gardens? If so fill out this simple form so Babbling Vagabonds and Illuminos can transform your memories into a wonder to behold.
The organisers need your stories of the High Street which will then be part of the Projection work (to be shared via youtube in the short term then live on the building when COVID allows!)
“Do you want to create an imaginary creature that secretly lives in the old M&S building? We will try and incorporate everyone’s work into the final projection!”, says Mark.
