Buxton Well Dressing Festival is now under way with plenty to look forward to this week including James Mellors Fun Fair,  lots of live music, a treasure hunt, food & drink and of course Carnival Day.

But what’s happening when? When does the fun fair arrive? And what bands are playing this year? Here’s your full run down so you can plan ahead and of course where you want to be on Buxton’s biggest party of the year – Carnival Day, enjoy folks 🙂

Wednesday 11th July

Festival Royalty Tour

Buxton Well Dressing Week What's On

Buxton Well Dressing Queen and Retinue will commence a tour of the town’s hospitals, nursing and care homes. A superb event that happens every year bringing the festivities to those are less mobile.

Sunday 15th July, 1pm – 9pm (On Sunday the fair is in support of Buxton Well Dressing Festival)

Buxton Well Dressing Queen officially opens the funfair on Wednesday 11th July at 4pm and rides will be open for all to enjoy – with the usual ‘white knuckle’ rides, children’s rides, amusement arcades and lots of candy floss and hotdogs…

Thursday 12th July

Liam McClair live at Buxton Tap House

When: 12th July 2018, 9pm – 11pm

Hailing from Wilmslow Cheshire,Singer Songwriter Liam McClair has been performing up and down the UK since 2014 with notable highlights being selling out headline shows in Manchester 2015 and 2016, a headline tour of Germany in 2016 performing at The Isle Of Wight Festival 2016, Kendal Calling 2016, back to back appearances at Dot To Dot 2015 and 2016 festival in Manchester and Nottingham.

Liam has opened for Circa Waves, Blossoms, Billy Bragg, Newton Faulkner and Echo & The Bunnymen five times prompting front man Ian McCulloch to have Liam support him on half of his solo tour of the UK.

Treasure Hunt

Buxton Well Dressing Week What's On

When: 13th July 2018, 6.30pm

Enjoy the famous annual Treasure Hunt! Starts outside the Buckingham Hotel (not the Old Hall Hotel as stated in the printed Buxton Well Dressing programme). Winner receives Alison Park Trophy and £40.

Purple Cloud of Funk

Sling live at Buxton Tap House

Buxton Well Dressing Week What's On

Sling are a Manchester band playing cosmic blues-kraut-hiphop-boogie. Taking John Lee Hooker boogies and adding something a little different, so that every gig is like a juke joint in the cosmos! They bring grooves to make you swing and stomp!

CATZ ROCK TO THE SUN featuring The Herding Catz Blues Band 🎸🎸 A great rocking night at The Old Sun this Friday. See the sensational Catz acoustic set with special guest from Nashville USA, Mark Allen. Blues, rock and some tracks off the newly released album.

Outdoor Bar, BBQ and Jazz Band at RedWillow

Buxton Well Dressing Week What's On

When: 14th July 2018, bar opens from 11.30am

An outside bar will be serving ice cold RedWillow cans of beer and a BBQ will be serving chorizo hot dogs with chilli jam in addition to the usual selection of drinks & pizzas inside. A jazz band will be playing in the afternoon.

Carnival Day Road Race

Buxton Well Dressing Week What's On

When: Saturday 14th July 2018, 1.45pm

Organised by Buxton Athletic Club. Begins New Wye Street near the town centre Waitrose Car Park and will be started by the Buxton Wells Dressing Festival Queen. The Buxton Carnival 4 is an accurately measured 4 mile road race through the streets of Buxton lined with packed crowds celebrating Carnival day – starting just ahead of the Carnival procession and finishing in the market place. Max number of entries 200. Entries on the day will be taken from 12 noon at the Derby University Halls of Residence, Bridge Street, Buxton (behind the Railway Hotel) and the prize giving presentation will take place there at approximately 3pm.

Buxton Carnival Parade

When: 14th July 2018, 2pm

The Queen and her Retinue will lead the procession which will finish at approximately 4pm. Street collectors will be around the town so please give generously 🙂

Where: Buxton – begins at New Wye Street and passes along Spring Gardens, St John’s Road, West Road and onto Buxton Market Place.

Parade of Queens

The Parade of Queens – an annual tradition featuring carnival queens in this years procession, will start just after 4pm opposite Buxton Swimming Pool in Pavilion Gardens.

Promenade Entertainment at Pavilion Gardens

After the carnival procession, there will be entertainment along the promenade in the Pavilion Gardens inc. Dronfield St John’s Ambulance Band, City of Manchester Fire Brigade Pipe Band and the Billerettes.

Three bands starting off with  Manchester SKA Foundation outside. The road – High Street, will be closed outside the Queens from 3.30pm or there abouts to set up for the first gig.

The Great Dome Art Fair

The Great Dome Art and Design Fair

When: 14th & 15th July 2018, 10am – 5pm (both days)

Annual art and design fair at Buxton’s magnificent Devonshire Dome. Part of the Buxton Festival Fringe, which runs from 4th – 28th July, The Great Dome Art and Design Fair will see over 40 members of the group exhibiting their work featuring handmade products, original artwork and unique gifts.

Throughout the weekend, twelve members will deliver a range of free, insightful talks and demonstrations covering a range of disciplines including ceramics, photography, mixed-media and fine art.
