Painting and drawing outdoors has become a familiar sight in Buxton over the past few years and recently artists were once again spotted in and around the town working on their entries for The Buxton Spa Prize 2018 – a plein air inspired art competition with a generous first prize of £5000 provided by the Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust.
This annual competition, which began in 2014, attracts entrants from around the British Isles, all of whom visit the town during May and June to paint or sketch in their allocated location. Their work is then exhibited throughout July at The Green Man Gallery in Buxton where entries are available to view and buy.
Alongside the main prize, there is also a second prize of £1000 sponsored by The University of Derby and a third prize of £500 sponsored by Buxton Roastery. The Buxton Spa Prize is also host of the Harold Riley Sketchbook Prize (1st prize £2000, 2nd prize £500, Highly Commended £250) sponsored by The Riley Educational Foundation. Winners of prizes are chosen by a distinguished panel of judges which this year includes:
*Harold Riley, DL, DLitt, FRCS (Hon), DFA, ATC, Chair of the Judging Panel
*Ken Howard, OBE RA, Artist
*Pete ‘The Street’ Brown, NEAC, Artist
*Ros Westwood, Derbyshire Museums Manager
*Louise Potter, Chair of the Friends of Buxton Festival
*Trevor Osborne, The Trevor Osborne Property Group

The Buxton Spa Prize 2018 People’s Choice prize goes to the artist voted for by visitors to the exhibition and they win an artist’s retreat in Porthlevin, sponsored by Trevor Osborne and Bill and Sheila Barratt. Last year, this prize was given to Keiran Ingram who’s winning artwork was also chosen to promote the 2018 competition.
