The UK is bracing itself for an artic blast as the Met Office issues weather warnings for snow and ice across many areas of the country. Rare Amber warnings have been issued as heavy snow in Buxton and the Peak District is expected today.
The Amber weather warning is in place from 12 noon – 6pm on Thursday 8th February for the Peak District and Pennines, including Buxton. Up to to 25cm of snow has been forecast for higher areas, with strong and gusty easterly winds today up to 35mph meaning blizzard conditions and drifting is possible. Travel disruption is likely.
Today will feel very cold with a maximum air temperature of 0°C but with a wind chill this will feel like -6°C.
The Met Office has indicated a high likelihood of snow isolating some rural areas, with potential power outages and mobile phone service disruptions.
Snow in Buxton is likely to continue into tomorrow. A Yellow weather warning is in place for Buxton until 6am on Friday. Temperatures for Friday will rise with a high of 5c.
What is causing this current ‘Arctic blast’?
The predicted heavy snow is the result of an Arctic air mass pushing down over the UK colliding with a rain front moving north-east across England and Wales.

Road Conditions in the High Peak
Derbyshire County Council update at 8.30pm, 8th February
The A57 Snake Pass has now managed to open which is passable with care and the A515 between Brierlow Bar and Buxton is now open following an earlier accident.
- The A6024 Holme Moss remains closed overnight.
The next update will be in the morning on the 9th February 2024.
