There’s some great shows and events on at Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre in April – jazz, children’s shows, films, live theatre and more – here’s our round up of 8 shows and events not to miss:

1. The Bootleg Beatles

One of the world’s most famous Beatles tribute bands, the Bootleg Beatles continue to draw critical acclaim from across the globe with their stunning recreation of the greatest songbook of all time.

Tracing the Fab Four’s journey through the 60s, every tiny detail is meticulously covered from costumes to authentic period instruments; from their witty ‘Scouse’ banter to their ‘inflection perfect’ vocal mimicry. Complete with a little help from their orchestral ensemble,  this is a not-to-be-missed spectacular for ‘Beatlemaniacs’ of all ages.

2. Buxton Buzz Comedy Club

More stand-up from some new and not-so-new faces on the comedy club circuit. Mike Wilkinson, Chris Purchase, The Huyton Poet. Compere: Peter Phillipson. Buxton Buzz Comedy Club is generally monthly, check the Opera House website for future shows.

3. Buxton Film Festival 2017

Now in its 5th year, Buxton Film hosts this week long festival, showing some of the best and latest blockbusters to some lesser knowsn independent films. With a recent upgrade to a new projection and sound system at the Pavilion Arts Centre Studio, Buxton Film is a hidden gem for the town and provides a great alternative to having to travel out of town to the cinema. 4. Jazz at the Arts Centre – The Original Panama Jazz Band

Jazz at the Arts Centre series of jazz events continues in April with The Original Panama Jazz Band, who have been playing together since 1954. Their line-up has seen 40 musicians pass through and the current sextet features some of the most experienced and versatile musicians on the North West jazz scene. Expect to hear traditional and Dixieland favourites. A nice way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon in Buxton. As always, lunches are available in the Arts Centre bar from 12.30pm.

5. Shakin’ Stevens

Following the release of his 12th studio album, Echoes of Our Times, Shakin’ Stevens embark on his biggest ever UK tour with Buxton Opera House as one of the venues chosen to host the Platinum-selling Welsh star.

The announcement comes just days after Shaky, as he is known to millions, released his critically acclaimed 12th studio album Echoes Of Our Times.

6. Goldilocks and the Three Bears

With sell-out performances and hugely successful CBeebies adaptations, including Ugly Duckling and Tortoise & the Hare, Northern Ballet’s Short Ballets for Small People are not to be missed.

Goldilocks is a mischievous little girl with hair as bright as gold. Always on the look-out for an adventure, one day her curiosity leads her to a house full of many surprises. With a family of friendly bears, a beautiful blue bird and bowls of delicious porridge, this ballet is just right!

Bringing this classic children’s story to life, Goldilocks & the Three Bears is the perfect opportunity for your little ones to enjoy live ballet, music and theatre for the first time.

This child friendly performance lasts approximately 40 minutes with no interval.

7. The Big Session Folk Festival 2017

Following its sold-out success last year, The Big Session Festival is back next month and taking place for an extended four days over the May Bank holiday weekend, from Friday 28th April to Monday 1st May.

Hosted by the Oysterband – join a sparkling selection of folk musicians and welcome in May at the first folk festival of the summer. And of course don’t forget the Pavilion Gardens Drinks Emporium, free for all Big Session ticket holders.

8. Steve Steinmans Iconic – The Show 

The creative force behind the hugely successful Vampires Rock, Steve Steinman’s all new hit show delivers the best of the best sound tracks from some of the coolest and Iconic movies of all time.

Set in the future where movie theatres have all but disappeared a magical cinema still stands. Run by an old usher Benson, who does his best to entice people to buy a ticket for the midnight screening and give them a night they will never forget.
