The Railway @ Buxton
Since re-opening this Autumn and let’s face it – with a complete transformation inside and also a brand new menu, this place is currently steaming ahead with its fast becoming infamous carvery! We’ve tried it ourselves and the food is tasty, good quality and the turkey fell away, it was beautifully cooked. The size of some of plates we saw coming away from the carvery queue became quite a talking point! We’ve tried it a few times now and the food really is good traditional, comfort food pub grub. The staff go above and beyond too. And yep, it’s super cosy – we love the nod the railways with the small booths at the back.
Bar Rene
Cosy seating, low lighting and you even serve yourself wine now, yes please. Makes a great stop off if you’re in town grabbing some last minute shopping and need a wee little pick me up, as they also serve teas and fresh coffees. The wine selection here is excellent with some top quality wines and with the recent redevelopment making this ‘new’ bar part of the french restaurant Bar Brasserie, it also looks lovely inside too. By the way – this picture shows the ajoining French restaurant, Bar Brasserie…we just haven’t had time to source one of the new wine bar and couldn’t find anything online.
The Old Sun Inn
A traditional Christmas Eve stop off for many, this lovely cosy pub is like a maze, with various ‘rooms’, nooks and crannies to tuck into with a pint of cask ale. Since re-opening in October and a subtle but much needed make-over, it’s back up there as far as cosyness goes. The open fire in the front lounge is so welcome and you might as well be in your own living room and it makes for a perfect winter meeting spot.
The Old Clubhouse
The Clubhouse is cosier than ever with it’s homely, rustic, modern country feel. Ok the food might not be best in town but for a winter stop off or an afternoon coffee, its perfect. Located right next to the theatre, it’s ideal for post panto drinks! The tartan wing chairs and the big wooden benches are a firm favourite of ours, right next to the huge log fire that’s blasts out the heat in the main bar.
The Swan
A traditional English pub if ever you’d seen one, the open fire in the small lounge is grand. They show lots of sports and so its a great place to watch footy and keep warm with one of the real cask ales on offer too. It’s also (as some of you locals probably know) is oft’ open ’till 1am. Rather handy for a late last drink if one is required…
53 Degrees North
The table and chairs by the open fire here has to be a prime, sought after spot during the winter months in Buxton and certainly during Christmas. With the ‘Apri-Ski / Alpine style decor and chunky wooden furniture, this place is the ultimate in cosyness; that coupled with their lovely homemade soups (which change daily) you’ll be warm as toast here in this current cold spell.
The Cheshire Cheese
The ‘Cheese’ has a homely feel, with lots of comfy seating areas to get cosy in, so ideal for large groups on Christmas Eve or work-do jollies. The open fire lives in a low lit room and it feels like you’re at granny’s for tea in there, really warm and just what you need in Buxton’s cold weather. The menu offers lots of hearty meals too.
