South 16 brings the flavours of the Mediterranean to Buxton this summer, as its opened its doors last week. Amidst the rustic chunky furniture, cosy lighting (with those rather lush vintage Edison style lightbulbs) and a golden bicycle in the window – there’s a sense of adventure with the new food menu, brand new cocktail menu and new world wines now on offer.
If you’re interested in trying out new flavour combinations then you’ll find it here. Although the menu leans towards a Mediterranean feel, uniquely there are three in-house chefs who are from Anguilla, Nigeria and Portugal, each bringing their own personal cooking expertise to the dishes.
New management team Nuno Saque Ferreira and Ant Staton said they’re really keen to “keep things fresh and make new additions to the menu all the time, so customers can keep trying something new. Tasty dishes such as Peri Peri chicken skewers will probably stick around because, who doesn’t love them?!” Other dishes on offer include sea bass, mediterranean chicken, beef tagliatelle and various sides which include nacho’s, olives and triple cut home made fries.
The launch party last weekend attracted a full house, where Nuno and Ant were keen to promote the big changes to the bar and restaurant, formerly known as Number 13. Nuno said, “foodies are going to love it here, and even more so now you can enjoy a cocktail in the bar too. Going by the Polaroid photo’s we took, I’m pretty sure everyone had a great time at the launch party – our wine stock was empty the next morning!”
To cater for Sunday lunch fans, the traditional Sunday roast is on offer with various meats available each week and featuring creamy mash potato, seasonal vegetables and a huge homemade Yorkshire pudding. FYI – we road tested the Sunday lunch this week; there’s plenty on the plate to fill you up, you can ask for the meat how you like it done and and everything was really tasty…the mash very morish. Ant said “Ok so the Sunday roast isn’t Mediterranean but we just had to do it – there’s a gap in the market in the area for a really good Sunday roast – and we just know how people love them!”
There’s also a children’s menu and high chairs if needed for little ones. Gluten free, vegan and vegetarian can also be catered for – just speak to the staff about your requirements when you visit.
The brand cocktail menu features some wild and fragrant creations such as Lavender Drop (Gin, elderflower, lavender and lemon), Rosie & Gin (Gin, lemon, rosemary and mango) and E Fragola (Rum, strawberry juice, lime and basil). There’s also craft beers, continental bottled beers and New World wines on offer – including New Zealand Sauvignon and Aspall Suffock Cider.
Accommodation is available above the bar and restaurant offering 4 double rooms and 1 twin on a room only basis. The rooms are beautifully decorated in antique French style furniture and with the town centre just a 5 minute walk away, this is perfect if you’re spending the weekend in Buxton. Free Wi-fi is available for guests in both accommodation and in the bar and restaurant.
South 16 also caters for private parties – weddings, birthdays or what ever the occasion.
