Tickets worth up to £75 at Buxton International Festival are going for a song – if you’re young enough…

The Festival for a Fiver offer which encourages people aged under 30 to take part in the annual celebration of opera, music and books has just opened, with all seats – whether it’s £10.50 for a literary talk or £75 for the best view of the three home-grown operas – will be just £5.

“Each year we try to encourage more young people to take advantage of our two weeks of drama and music, and a fiver isn’t much to risk on whether or not you’ll enjoy  a new experience – although we’re confident you will,” said Randall Shannon, Executive Director of the Festival.

“A fiver these days will barely buy you two cups of coffee, but here at Buxton it could open up a new world of spectacular opera in the gilded Buxton Opera House.

“Our music concerts include world-class pianist Paul Lewis, singer Barb Jungr who is renowned for her interpretations of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen – or you could hear former Liberal Democrat Leader Paddy Ashdown talk about spies, or historian David Starkey on Henry VIII.”

This year’s operas are Verdi’s Macbeth, Britten’s Albert Herring and Mozart’s Lucio Silla, but other performances include jazz violin from Lizzie Ball and music mixed with the fruits of the vine as TV wine expert Oz Clarke joins baroque group Armonico Consort.
